Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Last week was so much fun!  The Lucero in-store with Ben Nichols and Rick Steff was one of the best in-stores we have ever hosted.  Thank you to everyone that came out.  Pictures and video from the event will be posted later this week.

In addition to the in-store, Friday was also the day theANTIWARPT 2012 line up got announced.  What an incredible group of bands playing this year!  We’ve got early bird tickets available for $20, get them while you still can.

NEW RELEASES TUE MAY 29TH

Broken Water - “Tempest”

Second full-length from this Olympia, WA three-piece. Scuzzy ’90s style rock with elements of psych and shoegaze.  CD on sale this week for $9.98!

Melody Gardot - “The Absence”

Twenty-seven year old Melody Gardot doesn’t just deliver her smoky, speakeasy jazz like a vintage vixen - she also wisecracks like Lauren Bacall.  CD on sale this week for $12.98!

King Tuff - “King Tuff”

As a musician, King Tuff falls somewhere between having a distinct point of view and being a full on parody of flaky ’70s glam rockers. The King, as he likes to refer to himself, is a persona of Kyle Thomas, lead vocalist of the J Mascis side project Witch and freak folkers Feathers.  CD on sale this week for $10.98!

Ladyhawke - “Anxiety”

Pip retains the sizzling electronics and soaring melodies of her first offering, but delivers them like a sultry wrong’un wracked with self doubt, battering drums and attacking every guitar she can lay her hands on.  CD on sale for $10.98!

Lemonade - “Diver”

The album layers “classic” synth tracks with a vocalist whose sound is both understated and also clearly influenced by the singers under whom the likes of Paul Oakenfold (think Bunkka) has laid down beats.  CD on sale this week for $10.98!

Scissor Sisters - “Magic Hour”

This is the sound of a band truly enjoying themselves in the studio, confident enough in their abilities to freely collaborate with other big names.  CD on sale this week for $12.98!

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - “Here”

The band’s second release, Here, focuses more on the music. It’s still quirky folk-rock to be sure, but there’s less adorable dialogue and more tasty harmonies. Available on LP.  On sale this week for $9.98!

Sigur Ros - “Valtari”

Described by band members as a creative departure, mostly from the supposedly poppier, more upbeat direction of its last two albums, “Valtari” is in many ways more of a return to form, echoing the darker minimalism of “Ágætis byrjun” and “( )”.  Available on LP.  CD on sale for $11.98!

Regina Spektor - “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats”

She probably remains a bit of an acquired taste for some, but What We Saw From The Cheap Seats pulls off the impressive trick of stylistically bouncing about all over the place while retaining a very identifiable vision all of its own.  CD on sale for $13.98!

Julia Stone - “By The Horns”

A minimalistic musical backdrop, predominantly keyboards, allows Stone’s vocal expanse to breathe and flourish. This is a clear transition from her work with brother Angus, allowing her individual expression, resulting in a work of true depth and emotion.  CD on sale this week for $9.98!

The Walkmen - “Heaven”

Heaven is a record with the power to grab your heart, like an ex-lover you just can’t shake off—no matter how many years you’ve been without them.  CD on sale this week for $9.98!

NEW RELEASES TUE MAY 22ND

Damon Albarn - “Dr. Dee’

Recently released on CD — now available on vinyl. Available on LP.

Calexico - “Aerocalexico”

This double LP includes a coupon for a free download of the entire album.  Available on LP.

The Cult - “Choice Of Weapon”

Choice of Weapon is the Cult’s finest moment in 23 years; it’s the true swaggering heir to the period that birthed Electric and Sonic Temple, and proof that contrary to even Astbury’s stated belief in 2009 that the album is far from dead.  CD on sale this week for $13.98!

Electric Wizard - “Witchcult Today”

Reissue of the stoner-metal band’s sixth album. CD on sale this week for $11.98!

El-P - “Cancer4Cure”

Cancer 4 Cure is both reinvention and inversion. El-P’s first album since putting Def Jux on hiatus in early 2010 marks a break from the old order and another call to arms. This record consciously creates its own iron galaxy.  CD on sale this week for $12.98!

Garbage - “Not Your Kind Of People”

Nostalgia works in Garbage’s favor, as much of the album brings listeners back to the eponymous debut that set the band on track to sell 17 million records worldwide.  CD on sale this week for $12.98!

Gossip - “A Joyful Noise”

A Joyful Noise is the sound of Gossip taking their love of dance floor pop to its natural conclusion with their most accessible album yet.  CD on sale this week for $10.98!

Kimbra - “Vows”

While neither reinterpretations of the past nor genre hopping are unique in the world of pop, it’s the effortless way that Kimbra does it all that makes Vows a compelling listen.  CD on sale this week for $9.98!

John Mayer - “Born And Raised”

The Laurel Canyon music scene of the ’60s and ’70s is a major touchstone here.  On this album, that ramble-tamble style suits him. CD on sale this week for $9.98!

Paul And Linda McCartney - “RAM”

Remastered reissue of McCartney’s 1971 classic. CD on sale this week for $11.98 and Special 2 CD Edition on sale this week for $15.98!

Pelican - “Ataraxia/Taraxis”

Deluxe vinyl version with thick Stoughton jacket. Four new songs highlight the manifold sonic strengths of the band by delving into moments of triumphant melodic rock, smoky doom, ambient soundscape, acoustic desert-folk, and minimalist electronics.  Available on LP.

Joey Ramone - “…ya know?”

Tracks drawn from a cache of demos and unreleased recordings that Joey had cut at various times during the last decade-and-a-half of his life. It’s a riveting collection of previously unheard songs that embody his trademark intensity.  Available on LP.  CD on sale this week for $10.98!

Rebelution - “Peace of Mind” Dub LP

                    “Peace of  Mind” Acoustic LP

Originally available as a part of the deluxe version of Peace Of Mind on CD, each is now available on vinyl. Peace Of Mind Dub (you guessed it) is a dub version the album, remixed by Easy Star’s Michael Goldwasser.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Everybody’s Talkin’

Everybody’s Talkin’ contains eleven live tracks cherry-picked by the group to serve as a musical look-back on their first band-building year.  Available on LP.  CD on sale this week for $13.98!
